SMART Goal Setting

Have you ever set a goal for yourself and ended up defeated because you lost sight of what you set out to do?

It happens to us all at one time or another.

One way to keep this from happening next time is to make sure your goals are SMART.

SMART is an acronym for:

S=specific
M=measurable
A=achievable
R=relevant
T=time-based

And creating goals that meet all these criteria sets you up for success, unlike any other method. Working towards a goal without just one of these can lead to frustration and wasted time. Let’s look at how to make SMART goals to reach our full potential.

S=Specific
You want to be as detailed in your goals as possible. If you are vague in how you state your goal, you will have a much harder time reaching it! How can you get there if you don’t know exactly where you are going? Also, include why each goal is important to you.

Your why will play an important role in your success.

M=Measurable
Tracking your goals is vital to your success because it helps you see your improvement and accomplishments.

Measuring your goals keeps you motivated to keep going when obstacles arise. How will you measure your success? Put a plan in place to track them and refer to them daily to help keep you on track.

A=Achievable
Your goals should definitely stretch you out of your comfort zone, but they must be within the realm of possibility to attain. If they are so unreachable from where you are right now, you may become frustrated and give up.

It’s better to set up achievable goals and then once those are reached, make new ones that will help you reach the next level of success.

R=Relevant
This part of the equation is important because you only want to set goals that are important to you in reaching your potential. If you are setting a goal that’s important to someone else, but not you, rethink it. If goals aren’t important to you, it’s going to be difficult to maintain the necessary motivation to attain them.

T=Time-based
No matter what your goals are, you should set a timeframe for them. You can be flexible if necessary, but you need to focus on goals that have an end date in mind so you stay engaged with them.

This aspect also helps ensure that everyday responsibilities don’t overshadow your goals. They will stay utmost in your mind when there is an end date attached to each one.
